In Spirit Away, the ranks of the herds have slightly complicated definitions to them. Below describes the true definition of each rank.
Lord (1)
This horse is the ultimate leader of the herd. The Lord will always be a stallion, and he rules alone.
Beta (1)
The Beta of any herd must be a stallion, as he is next in line to the throne if something were to happen to the Lord. Besides that, the Beta is known as "second in command", thus leading the herd when the Lord isn't around to do so. This stallion is also around to help make decisions and suggest things in the Lord's favor.
Delta (1)
This rank can be given toward a stallion or a mare. Unlike the usual definition of a Delta, this horse is not next in line to become a Beta. They are, however, "third in command" and have the same privileges as a Beta. When neither the Beta or Lord is around the Delta will take charge of the herd. Sometimes if the Lord finds a Soulmate, he will give this rank to that particular mare.

Shaman (1)
The shaman of a herd is pretty much the healer, understanding basic herbal treatments and such. Horses aren't realistically known to have herbal knowledge, thus this horse will not have incredible knowledge on all herbs. Rank may be given to a mare or stallion.
Warrior (Unlimited)
The warriors of a herd are typically stallions, protecting the herd when in danger. Occasionally strong mares are chosen to become warriors as well, however these females are not permitted to have young, as a foal can prove as a distraction when in battle.
Scouts (Unlimited)
Scouts live up to their name; they are sent periodically to the borders to check for intruders or horses that want to join. These horses are the fastest steeds in the herd, as they must return quickly if they find something dangerous that is beyond their ability to ward off. Scouts should not be sent out at night unless necessary, and if so should be sent in groups. Scouts can be male or female.
Damsel (Unlimited)
This rank is for mares only. These horses have limited privileges in a herd, and usually just care for the young and reproduce.
Rogues (Unlimited)
This rank is the default rank toward any newcomer in the herd. They have even less privileges than a Damsel, and these horses are generally the outcasts of the herd unless they get chosen for another rank. This means that both at night and during the day, the rogues will be forced to stray along the back of the herd. Rogues may tag along with a Scout or Warrior to learn those roles, but will not formally be sent to a higher rank until the Lord decides so.
